The Queen of Hearts - Disney Designer Doll

The Queen of Hearts is an iconic character in Disney history. I fell in love with the designer doll's skirt, I have never created a fancy ball gown style costume and thought this was the perfect one to get my feet wet.

Construction Details:

The Bodice: The bodice is made of red velveteen fabric, I had to interface it to keep it from stretching. It has plastic boning to help keep the shape, and grommets in the back for a tie closure. There are rhinestones sprinkled across the bust for some glitz.

The Collar: The collar is attached to the bodice, and has 2 layers of interfacing, plastic boning, and aluminum wire to help keep it standing tall. The white ruffs are made of textured taffeta, and are sewn to the collar. The collar is edged with a sparkly red ribbon.

The Skirt: The skirt contains over 170 yards of rolled hem and ruffles (thats longer then a football field). There is over 25 yards of fabric in the skirt alone. About 15 yards of gold taffeta, and 10 yards of black lace. I used a serger to put a rolled hem on the taffeta and lace, and a ruffler foot to gather the fabric. The taffeta and lace were sewn on to the skirt in a layered fashion to create body and depth.
There is a hoop skirt underneath to help hold the shape.
The side poofs are made of velvet and lined in red satin, they are filled with tulle to give them shape.

The Wig: I started with a black ponytail wig. To create the bun I created a "rat" by stuffing a black sock with some scrap fabric, and wrapped the hair around the sock and then bent the sock into a bun shape. I sewed the ends of the sock together and adjusted the hair around the bun to cover all of the sock. Since the wig was so thick I used the left over wig to create a braid that I wrapped around the base of the bun, I had intended to add the left over hair as the second bun on her updo (like on the doll) but it made the wig to unmanagable with the collar behind the head.

Other Details : The crown was made out of worbla that I shaped with a heat gun and painted gold. I glued on some rhinestones for some extra bling and mounted it to a headband. The necklace was purchased in an artist alley, it was perfect for the character. The gloves were sewn out of the same velvet as the corset and peplums, they also have rhinestones glued on for sparkle. The bow in the back was made out of interfaced velvet and clips onto the back of the corset, there are some gold roses in the back for a fun touch.
