Royal Milk Tea - Sakizou Afternoon Tea Artbook

I fell in love with the artwork of Japanese artist Sakizou when I found her "Afternoon Tea" artbook. The costumes are so frilly, and girly and detailed - as well as somewhat absurd.Royal Milk Tea looked so fun to construct, and the idea of wearing a teapot on my head convinced me I must make this costume. I thought it would be a fun challenge for me since I never really do sewing heavy costumes and had a ton of fun making her.

Construction Details:

The Bolero: I use a vogue pattern as my base and heavily altered it to add a striped collar and puff sleves. The jacket is made out of a peacock colored iridescent taffeta and lined in a teal colored cotton. The puff sleeves were layered with batting in the middle and then hand gathered to create the quilted look, a small pearl decoration was sewn on top of each gather. Cream colored frills were added to the shoulders, the stripes on the collar were painted on using an airbrush and an stencil, and gold beads were added to the lace trim.

The Corset: This corset is fully boned and lined. This was my fist time making a corset and it turned out lovely if i do say so myself! I used steal spiral boning that I cut and tipped myself. The outer shell is made of a pearlized polyester fabric that I found in the home decor section of JoAnns, and it is lined in a teal cotton quilting fabric for fun. I used stiff interfacing to give support to the fabrics, and lined the top and bottom in a gold lame bias tape. The corset also featured hand hammered grommets and a busk .

The Skirt: The top skirt is made out of a peacock colored taffeta. It is gathered at the top and has a ruffled edge on the bottom. I made the ruffles using a ruffler foot, and used a serger to add a rolled hem to the bottom.
The cream colored skirt was made with a cream colored costume satin, I hand sewed 6 yards of the gold leaf trim to the bottom ruffle before I put a rolled hem on and ruffled it.
I am wearing 2 petticoats with this skirt, but they were purchased from a costume store. I may go back and make my own some time.

The Wig: The wig is a silver colored Jeanne from Arda Wigs, I used curlers and a steamer to add some curls to the ponytail, and clipped it up with a clip, to reduce the length. I also made a blue striped ribbon to add to the hair, since no one sells blue stripped ribbons.

The Teapot: The teapot was made by covering 2 Styrofoam balls with model magic, the handle and spout are also made of model magic. They both have wires inside them for support. A scrap of fabric was added to the top, and small gold beads, were added for decoration. The teapot was mounted on to the headband, which was decorated with clear plastic gems and gold puff paint.

The Shoes: These started as a grey suede shoe from Payless. I painted it with about 4 coats of white leather paint to create a white shoe. I then decorated the shoe with some blue ruffled ribbon, gold ribbon and bead trim and a clear plastic gem decorated with gold puff paint.

Other Details: The bracelets and necklace were created by me using beads and findings that I found in walmart bargin bins. The stockings were made out of a satin spandex (to match the opera gloves that I purchased) and were decorated with a lace trim, and window decals that I painted on using an airbrush and stencils.
